The 2016 European Canoe-Kayak Championships, Plovdiv

Plovdiv is ready to host the European Canoe-Kayak Championships in 2016

27 competitors will represent Bulgaria at the European Canoe-Kayak Championships for juniors and under-23s, which will take place from 14 to 17 July in Plovdiv. A total of around 750 athletes from 35 countries are arriving for the European Championships.

The greatest hopes for a medal in the men’s category rest on canoeist Angel Kodinov, who has also secured an Olympic quota place and will compete at the Games in Rio de Janeiro. Last year, Angel won three medals at the European Championships in Romania – two silver in the 1,000 and 500 metre events and a bronze in the 200 metre event. A strong performance in the women’s under-23 single kayak is also expected from Olimpiya Dusheva.

“We would like to thank the Ministry of Youth and Sport for its support, and Plovdiv City Council for the full cooperation it has provided in organising the championships. Everything is going according to plan and the final details are currently being finalised. I believe Plovdiv is ready to host the European Championships,” said Evelina Petrova, Executive Director of the Bulgarian Canoe-Kayak Federation.

In 2017, Plovdiv is set to host the European Championships for men and women, and in 2018 the city will host the World Championships for junior boys and girls and under-23 men and women.
