The lack of a second channel meant Plovdiv missed out on hosting the 2025 World Canoe and Kayak Championships for men and women. As a result, the championships were awarded to Milan, Italy. The last time our country hosted a major event was in 2018, when it hosted the Under-23 World Championships. The city beneath the hills will also host the Under-23 Championships in 2024, but it is now impossible to host the men’s and women’s events until a warm-up course has been built.
“They told us: ‘If you have a training canal, it won’t be up to you to ask – we will insist on awarding you the championship, because the climatic conditions in Plovdiv are very good’,” said Nikolay Bukhalov, president of the Bulgarian Canoe-Kayak Federation.

The restitution cases have now been concluded, whilst the pandemic has delayed the search for an investor. According to preliminary estimates, the construction of the second canal will cost around 10 million leva.
